Catherine Lynch, late of Wilmington, NC, died on March 1, 2013 after a brief illness. Born Catherine Dineen, in Ballyhaise, County Cavan, Ireland on June 28, 1927, she emigrated to Manhattan, NY in 1950. She married Patrick Lynch in August of 1954. She worked briefly as a pre-school teacher and together with her husband, owned Doonaree Irish Imports in New York City. In later years, she co-owned, with her daughter, Catherine, Mattie Haskins' Shamrock Imports, the oldest Irish import shop in the United States, which opened on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in 1923. She followed her daughter to Wilmington, North Carolina in 2006, where she continued to work in a new Irish retail store, named for her grand-daughter - Sinead's Cottage on Carolina Beach Road. Her husband, Patrick Lynch, died in 1996. Siblings John, Thomas, Frank and Margaret Dineen, all of Ballyhaise, and Rose Gemeli of Brooklyn, died previously, as well. She is survived by a daughter, Catherine Lynch and her companion, Eugene Maloney, both of Wilmington; a son, Colm Lynch and his wife, Kathleen, of Ballyhaise, Ireland; a brother, James Dineen of Yonkers, NY; a sister, Mary McGerty of Ballyhaise, Ireland; a sister, Theresa McGinnis and her husband, Paschal of Monmouth Beach, NJ; a sister, Nancy O'Connor of London, England; a brother, Paddy Dineen of Oxford, England; five grandchildren - Sinead Tagliaferro of Wilmington, Colm Derasmo of Jersey City, NJ, and Kevin, Catriona, and Fiona Lynch of Ballyhaise, Ireland, and one great-grandchild, Sophia Grace Tagliaferro of Wilmington, NC. A private service was conducted at the home of daughter, Catherine Lynch. A service and interment will be held in Ballyhaise, Ireland. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be sent to the Katherine and Duncan Phillips Life Care and Counseling Center, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC, from whom she received strong, empathetic care in the last days of her life.
