David Harold Neilson Bean

Thanks to God, David lived a very full life. We knew him as an awesome Father, Husband and Grandpa - quick with a smile, words of encouragement and a helping hand - that could come in almost any format. We also knew him as a carpenter and lawyer - building and remodeling homes, creating and restoring furniture - while also helping clients navigate, protect, and secure better outcomes. The eldest of five Brothers, Dad inherently seemed to look out for others more than himself. His strong, yet gentle and loving manner helped put others at ease. From teaching us prayers at bedtime, to inspiring the next generations, his focus on the well-being and future possibilities of others was central - such was his noble nature. From a youth in Massachusetts and SoCal (including periodic trips to Mexico) - to law school and a life in DC, NC, SC and VA - Dad and Mom seemed to flow with the often-unpredictable currents of life, choosing to see the bright side of things – and helping others along the way to do the same. It is hard to isolate Dad in this tribute, as he and Mom were truly such a duo - for 62+ years. Their young and bohemian spirit was contagious and indomitable. His passions for education, food, law and science were ever present. When he wasn’t creating or representing - beaches, books and rugby were some of the simple pleasures of life he loved to enjoy. It is easy to hear his humor still shining through … “who doesn’t want ice cream?!?”… delivered with a wonderful grin. He and Mom are surely one of the greatest romances of all time. Rarely were they apart, and the dinner table was a Family gathering and ritual that nourished us all, in more ways than one (often including a much broader mix of Family and Friends from all walks of life). Dad never sought recognition – rather that, whenever he helped someone, they might pay it forward and rise to help others, and ultimately the greater good. Much as he lived, his guiding principle and recurring advice to us was always - leave things, leave people, leave this place, better than you found it. Pop - you have left this place, and us, better than you found us. Thank you for how you lived, how you loved, and who you are. You will remain in our hearts forever. With Family far and wide, we will celebrate Dad’s life in future with a beach day he would enjoy.
