Fredric Philip Recksiek

Fredric Philip Recksiek passed away peacefully on May 10, 2026, at the age of 91. He was predeceased by his parents, Frederick W. and Augusta Recksiek, and his sister, Dorothy Wargo. Fredric was born on November 15, 1934, in New York City to parents of German descent. He grew up in Elmont and Flushing, New York, attended Sewanhaka High School, and graduated from Queens College in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. Following college, Fred was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War era and served for two years while stationed in Germany. During his military service, he developed a lifelong passion for international travel, spending his leave exploring countries throughout Europe. Fred enjoyed a successful career as a Certified Public Accountant, establishing and managing several private practices. From 1981 to 1982, he served as President of the Suffolk Chapter of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants. Shortly after marrying the love of his life, Ingrid Hoerle, on August 4, 1962, Fred and his growing family settled in Fort Salonga, New York, where they lived in their family home for more than 30 years. There, they built lasting friendships and became part of a close-knit community that remained dear to them throughout their lives. Fred was an avid bowler and won numerous trophies over the years. Bowling was not only a favorite pastime, but also a cherished weekly social tradition shared with Ingrid and many dear friends. A lifelong Lutheran, Fred remained deeply involved in the church throughout his life, from New York to North Carolina. He faithfully volunteered in many capacities, including serving as Treasurer and usher, and also dedicated many years of service to his local food pantry. Upon retirement, Fred and Ingrid moved to Kure Beach, North Carolina, where they enjoyed living near lifelong friends and family before building their home on the Lockwood Folly River in Supply, NC. They spent 25 happy years there, surrounded by wonderful neighbors, stunning sunsets and many new friendships. Fred was rarely far from a crossword puzzle, beginning one each morning and never resting until it was complete, no matter how challenging. He was also an avid reader, particularly of mystery novels and especially the works of Agatha Christie. Trips to the library, followed by visits to the post office and bank, became part of his cherished daily routine. A lifelong stamp collector, Fred carefully maintained and expanded a collection he began in childhood, including stamps preserved by his mother. Known for his playful sense of humor, Fred delighted in classic pranks and lighthearted jokes that he continued sharing even in his final days with the nurses and aides who cared for him. Fred loved dogs—though cats seemed especially fond of him as well. He remained active for many years playing racquetball into his 70’s and was a member of both the Hauppauge Racquet Club and the Carolina Beach Recreation Center. As a young man, he enjoyed chopping firewood, partly because of his practical and frugal nature, heating the family home in New York primarily with a wood-burning stove. Long before it became common practice, Fred embraced the ideals of “reduce, reuse, recycle,” often sending gently used household items to his children while they were away at college. Fred and Ingrid shared a love of travel and adventure, exploring the world together with friends and family. Their journeys took them to remarkable destinations including the Galápagos Islands, La Paz and Lake Titicaca in Bolivia, Canary Islands, safaris in Kenya, two memorable trips throughout China, and sailing excursions along the coast of Croatia and the Dalmatian Coast. Fred is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Ingrid; his four children, Christa Recksiek of Wilmington, NC, Karin Mills (Tom) of Wilmington, NC, Peter Recksiek of The Dalles, OR, and Paul Recksiek (Jodi) of Arlington, VA; and his five grandchildren, Avery and spouse Sarah, August, Delilah, Harrison, and Jane. A memorial service will be held at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southport, North Carolina, on August 29 at 11:00 a.m. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Southport, NC or Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Hospice Center.
