George Lowell Dolin, DDS

Dr. George Lowell Dolin, DDS died March 24, 2014 at his home in Hampstead, NC while in the loving care of his devoted wife of 67 years, Margaret Ann, his five children and Hospice of Cape Fear. Born February 3, 1924 in Charleston, WV, he was the son of George W. and Ada H. Dolin of Kanawha City, WV. He graduated from Charleston High School in 1943 and attended WVU where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi and Captain of the Rifle Team. In 1950 he graduated from the University of Pittsburg School of Dental Surgery where he was a member of the Delta Sigma Delta Fraternity and again Captain of the Rifle Team. George and Margie were married in Charleston on August 23, 1947. They moved to St. Albans in 1950 where they raised five children and he began his dental practice. For 44 years he truly enjoyed his profession and his patients. He was grateful for the many faithful years of service given by Kathryn Williams and Skip Robinson who were an integral part of his successful practice. Dr. Bill Cogar practiced with George from 1957 to 1965, and Dr. Randy Robinson, who grew up as his patient, joined him in 1977. George was a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church for 40 years where he served as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and on numerous committees. In Hampstead, he and Margie found a church home at the Topsail Presbyterian Church. His faith in God was exemplified in the way he lived his life. He was a member and past president of the Kanawha Valley Dental Society, member of the Charleston Dental Study Club, WV Dental Association and the American Dental Association. He served on the St. Albans Building Commission and was a founding member of the Citizens National Bank of St. Albans where he was on the Board of Directors. He was a 38 year member and past President of the St. Albans Rotary Club and became a Paul Harris Fellow. George was an avid bird hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed many years of hunting and fishing trips with his family and friends. He was a founding member of the Snowshoe Ski Resort where he spent many wonderful years skiing and playing tennis and golf. He cherished every opportunity to teach his grandchildren how to ski. Upon retirement George and Margie moved to Snowshoe for 8 years before moving to Hampstead, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Helen Lambert and Mary Alexander; and son-in-law, Richard R Hendren, Jr. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Georgann Hendren, Elizabeth (Libby) Godwin and husband Jerry, and Nancy Pate and husband Buddy; sons, David Dolin and wife Sue, and Robert Dolin and wife Julie; grandchildren, Katie Stumph and husband Brad, Richard Hendren, Jeremy Godwin and wife Lauran, Joshua Godwin, Michael Pate and wife Beth, David Pate and wife Cindy, Dr Jason Smithers and wife Jessica, Jefferson Smithers, Juston Smithers and wife Leah, Robert Dolin, Ryan Dolin and wife Ashley, Christopher Dolin and David Dolin; and great grandchildren, Evan Johnson, Mary Gale, Maximilian and Griffin Godwin, and Ella, Julian, Emma and Benjamin Smithers. Also survived by his brother-in-law, Dr. Paul Lambert; nieces, Jenifer Hubbard, and Patty Balevic; nephews, Dr. Paul Lambert Jr. and Dr. Mark Lambert; and Goddaughter, Polly Bowman. A memorial service will be held at 11am on, Saturday, March 29 at Topsail Presbyterian Church, Hampstead, NC with a reception to follow. A second service will be held at the First Baptist Church, St. Albans, WV on May 3. A grateful thank you to his many special caregivers and to Reverend Owen Carriker.
