James Howard Carroll Jr.

It is with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of James Howard Carroll, Jr, (Jimmy/JC), age 74. Jimmy passed away peacefully on July 20, 2026, at his home in Wilmington, NC, under the care of Lower Cape Fear LifeCare. Jimmy was the son of the late James H. Carroll and Alma Louvenia Rentz Craven of Walterboro, SC. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Steve Carroll and Kenny Carroll and an infant sister, Shirley Carroll. Jimmy leaves behind his wife, Mary; daughter, Lisa Osborne (David); son, Jamie Carroll and Mary’s son, Terry “Chris” Johnston (Teresa); grandchildren, Reese Osborne, Cade Osborne, Mary Grace Johnston and Lily Johnston; sister, Gayle Bishop; brothers-in-law, Paul Sedelmeyer (Marilyn) and Jim Sedelmeyer; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. Jimmy lived in and around Walterboro and Charleston, SC, until the age of 15 when he moved to Southport, NC. He spent 51 years in Southport before moving to Florida for five years and then to Wilmington, NC, in March of this year. Jimmy started his work life at E.I. Dupont in Leland, NC, spending seven years working on swing shifts. Afterwards, he began his 30-year, federal government career working for the U.S. Army, Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny Point, Southport, NC. He was part of a group of new hires employed to run the Army’s new in-house Railroad Operations Division previously managed through a contractor. In this job, he worked as a member of the train crew, as well as in a supervisory capacity managing the day-to-day operations. Prior to his retirement, he was an Ammunition Container inspector, a position he truly enjoyed. After retirement, he worked part-time for nine years with Sherwin Williams in Southport, NC. Jimmy had a strong work ethic and was never afraid of working two jobs at a time. Jimmy had a hardline attitude and oftentimes he hid a beautiful, sensitive and loving heart. He was sometimes misunderstood, because he could be very stubborn at times. He did his best in life whether it be as employee, husband, father, sibling or friend. Jimmy loved spending time with family and friends drinking a cold one and telling endless stories (sometime over and over again). He was mischievous and always up to something, playing tricks on people, teasing people and giving people all sorts of nicknames. He loved fast cars, dirt track racing and NASCAR. The “younger” Jimmy had a race car, an old junker he repaired and raced at Leland and Myrtle Beach. He enjoyed shooting pool, listening and shag dancing to his favorite old beach-music songs, or listening and slow dancing to his country music favorite George Jones. He enjoyed his friendships best of all. He found happiness in a very structured, simple lifestyle.
