Susan Penland Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Susan Carol Simpson Penland, 69, of Sunset Beach NC, formerly of Fayetteville NC, died Tuesday, January 9th, 2024 with her sons by her side. Susan was born on February 17th, 1954 at Gary AFB in San Marco, TX. She was a 1972 graduate of Terry Sandford High School in Fayetteville and received her BS in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 1976. Susan worked for over 20 years in various positions at Purolator Products in Fayetteville. She was a longtime member of McPherson Presbyterian Church where she adored her church family. Susan was a friend to many and loved life. Her favorite things included her family, knitting, traveling and the beach. After retirement, Susan moved to Sunset Beach where she grew to love the Sunset Village community as well as many parishioners in her new church home Seaside UMC. She enjoyed several years reconnecting with old friends and making many new ones. Susan is survived by her two sons Justin B. McCarty, his wife April of Sunset Beach and their son Colton, and John "Jay" Johnson, his wife Kristen of Orange City FL and their children Saylor and Barron. She is also survived by her brother James "Jim" Simpson, his wife Janice of Fayetteville and their son Joshua, an adored niece, Holly Penland her wife Lori of Snead's Ferry along with many cherished friends. Susan was preceded in death by her husband Harold; and her parents Hybert "Gene" Simpson and his wife Mary. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, January 27th at 11am at Seaside United Methodist Church in Sunset Beach NC with a small reception to follow.
