Luleen Anderson

Dr. Luleen Sandefur Anderson of Wilmington, NC passed away on August 19, 2022. Born in 1933, Luleen was the eighth of nine children and grew up in the small farming community of Roberta, GA. As a child of the depression, she understood the value of community, hard work, and sharing with others. After graduating from Crawford County High School (in the first class required to attend 12th grade,) Luleen enrolled in Wesleyan College on scholarship, were she earned a degree in Psychology and the title of Miss Wesleyan 1958. She went on to earn her Master’s from Emory University and Ph.D. from Boston University. A practicing clinical psychologist for 50 years, Luleen served as Coordinator of Psychological Services and Head of Elementary Guidance for the Quincy, MA Public Schools. She also held her own private counseling practices both in Massachusetts and Wilmington, NC and taught collegiate level courses. She was one of the best in her field and was highly respected by both her colleagues and clients. Luleen was a gifted storyteller and lover of the written word. She published four books, wrote numerous articles for professional journals, and was a frequent contributor to local newspapers and magazines such as WILMA. Never judging and with enormous wit, she told stories of everyday people living everyday lives. She modeled for us the Knack of a Happy Life, which was the title of one of her books. In 1991, Luleen moved to Wilmington where she quickly became an integral part of the fellowship at Church of the Servant Episcopal Church and spent many years and hours supporting the Bargain Box outreach ministry. Through the church, Luleen found an amazing group of women who became her cherished friends. The family is grateful for the love and support of this group. Luleen is survived by her son Eric Anderson of Raleigh, NC; sister Gloria Cox of Macon, GA; nieces Carroll Coyle (Gary) of Albany, GA, Lee Boone (Joe) of Irwinton, GA, Deborah Spearman (Frank) of Ft. Valley, GA and Mitzi Schrimsher (Tommy) of Huntsville, AL; and godchildren Nathan Finnin (Kaitlin) of Kill Devil Hills, NC and Janie Finnin of Boone, NC. She also will be remembered by her many loved friends and colleagues. The Rev. Jody Greenwood and The Rev. Nathan Finnin will co-officiate a Memorial Service on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, 11 a.m., at Church of the Servant, 4925 Oriole Drive, Wilmington with a reception afterward at the church. Contributions in Luleen’s memory may be made to Wesleyan College or to Church of the Servant Outreach Ministries or Lower Cape Fear Life Care
